There are several types of dentists Potts Point, each providing different dental services. To provide their patients with the best possible services, dentists must study extensively and pass rigorous exams to reach their highest level of expertise. Most people love visiting the dentist after they get past the dreaded appointment stage, at which time thinking about having one’s teeth cleaned sounds luxurious.

The most common licensed dental professionals are general, paediatric, endodontist, periodontist, and prosthodontist. These dentists usually provide services such as tooth crowns, bridges, implants and gum disease treatments. Each of these categories is outlined below:

General Dentistry: General dentists are the ones first thought of when talking about “the dentist.” They offer services such as teeth cleanings, cavity fillings, routine examination, wisdom tooth removal treatments and root canals. They can also place permanent bridges or dentures.

Paediatric Dentistry: This field involves the dental care of children, infants and teens. Paediatric dentists provide child-friendly services (such as toys in the waiting room) and study baby teeth to determine when they should be lost during childhood development. They also educate parents about tooth care at home. Paediatric dentists can also provide oral sedation as necessary for children’s treatment.

Paediatric dentists also specialize in tooth extractions, emergency care and oral health education for parents. They usually perform most procedures without anaesthesia if a young patient is comfortable enough for it. As a dentist working with kids, you’ll want to obtain your first-aid and CPR certification just in case or to have at least one member of the staff ready to provide assistance in emergency situations.

Endodontics: Endodontists specialize in studying and treating diseases and conditions affecting the teeth and their surrounding structures. They focus on root canals, tooth pain alleviation and dental reconstruction (bridges, crowns).

Periodontics: These dentists work with patients to diagnose gum disease and provide treatments to help cure the disease. A periodontist may also offer children’s dental care, oral surgery, sedation dentistry and oral cancer screenings.

Prosthodontists: Prosthodontists are educated in the diagnosis, treatment planning and rehabilitation of individuals with problems related to their teeth, jaws and supporting structures. These specialists concentrate on preventative dentistry, oral surgery and dental technology.

In addition to these professional types of dentists, there are also a number of assistants that aid in completing the work of a dentist. These include:

  • Dental Hygienist – Dental hygienists have been educated extensively on issues related to oral health. They measure a patient’s blood pressure, provide oral cancer screenings and educate patients on proper at-home dental care.
  • Dental Assistant – Dental assistants help dentists complete their work smoothly. They are an essential part of the dental team since they are trained to assist with X-ray preps, process x-rays, apply fluoride varnish, and manage equipment.
  • Dental Technician – Dental technicians help dentists and hygienists in the dental office, most likely cleaning teeth and sterilizing instruments. They do not receive nearly as much education or training as a dental assistant; they may be certified, but they will most likely not perform any procedures.
  • Dental office assistants: These professionals do not need any formal education, and they generally perform clerical work such as scheduling appointments, answering phones and filing documents.
