What Is The Meaning Of AFCON?

AFCON is an acronym that stands for “Africa Cup Of Nations”. The meaning of AFCON is that it is the main international men’s association football competition in Africa. It is authorized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and was first held in 1957, but since 1968, AFCON has been held every two years. Even the titleholders at the time of a FIFA Confederations Cup qualify for that competition.

There are in total 24 teams in the AFCON, in which the most successful team in Egypt. Primarily, in 1957 there were only three participating nations such as Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Throughout the complete history of the AFCON, three different trophies have been awarded to the winners of the competition.

The authentic trophy, manufactured of silver, was the Abdelaziz Abdallah Salem Trophy, named following the first CAF president, Egyptian Abdelaziz Abdallah Salem. Whereas, the second trophy was awarded between 1980 to 2000, and was named “Trophy of African Unity” or “African Unity Cup”. While in 2001 the third was revealed, a gold-plated cup designed and made in Italy. First and second-time winners generally get a smaller sized replica for their trophy cabinets.

There are many beautiful events that happened in the starting years of AFCON like some can be stated as 1950-60s: Origin and early years, 1960s: Ghanian domination, 1970s: a decade of champions, 1980s: Cameroonian and Algerian domination, 1990s: The return of South Africa, 2000s: Egypt’s unprecedented treble, etc.
