The term ACS is an acronym stands for “Acute Coronary Syndrome”. The meaning of the term ACS is that it is a syndrome, due to decreased blood flow in the coronary arteries such that part of the heart muscle is unable to function properly or dies. Where the word syndrome is a set of signs and symptoms.
The most common symptoms are the chest pain, often also radiating to the left shoulder or angle of the jaw, crushing, central and associated with nausea and sweating. Most of the people with acute coronary syndromes are present with symptoms other than chest pain, particularly, women, older patients, and patients with diabetes mellitus.
The acute coronary syndrome is commonly associated with three clinical manifestations, which are named according to their appearance of the electrocardiogram (ECG): ST-elevation myocardial infarction, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, or unstable angina.
In many cases, the symptoms and signs of ACS are very “atypical”, with pain experienced in different ways or even being completely absent. This type of sensation most likely occurs in female patients and those suffering from diabetes. Some may also report palpitations, anxiety or a sense of impending doom and a feeling of being acutely ill.
